BLANKENSHIP, JACK "Jack the Rock" Jack Blankenship, who was born and raised in San Diego County and spent most of his life raising his family in East County, died peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2009. He and his wife and family had relocated to Columbus, Montana in 1992 to enjoy their retirement years. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, his granddaughter Christina and his son-in-law Duke Crockett. He is survived by his wife Patricia; four children Kathleen (Steve), Lyn, Kevin (Mary), Joey (Scott), and his son-in-law Steve Hegstrum; six grandchildren, Ty, Courtney, Justin, Theresa, Amy, and Daniel and five great-grandchildren. Jack played baseball for the California League until sustaining injuries in World War II. Jack served his country in the Army in the 84th Infantry Division in World War II, receiving a Battle Field Commission in 1944, at the age of 22. He also received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Jack was a member of the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid supporter of FFA, 4-H and youth baseball clubs. He was an honorary member of the El Cajon Valley FFA Chapter. Jack was a founding member of the Eastern San Diego County Jr. Fair and a member of the Lakeside Rodeo Association. He dedicated his life to his wife, children, grandchildren and the youth of his community. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and a loving husband and will be truly missed by all who had the honor to know him. The family thanks the Billings Clinic and Riverstone Hospice for their kindness. Private family Services will be held.
