Boatswain's Mate 1st Class Brian J. Ouellette Maynard, Massachusetts grew up in Waltham, the third child of eight children, and graduated from Waltham High School, where he played football and lacrosse teams and also held a black belt in Kempo-style karate. On his 23rd birthday in 1990 he joined the Navy and after completing rigorous SEAL training, graduated from the Naval Special Warfare Center in March, 1991. He was attached to Navy Special Warfare Group Two at Little Creek Amphibious Base in Virginia. Before being deployed to Afghanistan, he served at various locations in Central and South America and in Bosnia. A few months before his death, Brian had a chance to go home for vacation, but opted to stay in Afghanistan so younger soldiers with families could leave. A native of Needham, Mass., Brian enlisted in the Navy in 1990 and became a SEAL in 1991. He is remembered as a dedicated member of the SEALs, an elite fighting force that undergoes some of the toughest military training in the world. He was the son of John J. ‘Jack' and Margaret H. Desmond Ouellette of Maynard. In addition to his parents he leaves six brothers and one sister. He was also a grandson of the late Daniel J. Desmond and Clarence and Edme Ouellette. He was one of four members of the American special forces killed by a mine in Zabul province. He was 37.
