S. Leonard Tyler, 86, of Gladewater, Texas, father of Sam L. Tyler II and Lynette Sams of Conway, died Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) in a Longview, Texas, hospital.

Born April 6, 1912, in Hickman County, Tenn., a son of James E. and Mattie Derinda McGhee Tyler, he was a grammar school principal and a high school basketball coach in Bruceton, Tenn., a physical education instructor, Bible teacher, and the first chorus director at Florida College in Tampa.

A graduate of Hillsborough High School in Tampa, he attended Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tenn., and graduated from Abilene Christian College. He was a minister at Seminole Church of Christ in Tampa, and for the Church of Christ in Pine Bluff and Huntsville, Ala. He was also a minister at Judson Road Church of Christ in Longview, from 1972 until the late 1980s, and remained an elder until his death.

Other survivors are his wife, Sammie Ruth "Doll" Tyler; another daughter, Derinda Slone of Nacogdoches, Texas; four sisters, Florida Carter of Weatherford, Texas, Geda Forriest of Franklin, Tenn., Evelyn Chatman of Macon, Ga., and Hazel Jones of Fairview, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rader Funeral Home in Longview with Ken Vaughn officiating, assisted by Ron Halbrook, Kevin Sams, Sandy Slone, Sam L. Tyler II, and Clark Dugger. Entombment will be in Lakeview Mausoleum in Longview.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
