Elgin was born May 3, 1927 on a farm South of Perkins, OK to William Thomas Starling and Susie Elizabeth Wells Starling. Elgin attended school in Perkins, OK, Carney, OK, and Oak Grove in Lincoln County, OK.
He had 3 brothers, Lawson Starling, Roma Starling, and Noel Starling, and 6 sisters, Bessie Davis, Tressie Flanigan, Lura Hagar, Myrtle Kennedy, Irma Starling, and Opal Reese, all preceding him in death. Elgin married his wife Bettye Johnson on April 6, 1946. Together they had one son James Murel Starling.
He spent his early years farming, then worked 23 years in the Oil Field followed by 23 years working for Cain’s Coffee Co. retiring in May of 1992. Elgin was an avid Traveler having visited 42 states and Canada. His summer months were spent in his garden raising tomatoes and lots of vegetables, sharing with family, friends, and neighbors.
One of Elgin’s hobbies was working with his hands building replicas of all the old farming machinery he used while on the farm out of screws, nails, and bolts. He built a drilling rig like the one he ran for those 23 years with all the working parts operating as they did on the actual rig.
Elgin did not get to travel as he planned upon retirement in May of ’92 as he had two heart attacks and a stroke a month later. However, he had triple bypass surgery and bounced back to lead a full life of doing what he loved best, working in his yard. Elgin’s luck ran out in October of 2014 when he came down with pneumonia and left the hospital unable to walk. He was admitted to Edmond Health and Rehab Center for therapy. One hundred and ten days later he walked out of that facility on a walker. One week later he had a light stroke and 3 days later he fell out of bed. He was admitted back into Edmond Health and Rehab where he spent the rest of his days until God called him home.
Survivors include his wife Bettye and Son James of Edmond. Services will be held at Matthews Funeral Home on Friday February 20, 2015 at 2 pm. Interment will follow at Carney, Oklahoma Cemetery.
Public visitation will be on Wednesday February 18, 2015 from 12-8.
