Oswego, KS: Daniel Frederick Rankin, Sr., age 88 of Oswego, passed from this life on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Deseret Nursing Home in Oswego.

Dan was born on January 29, 1927 to the union of Frank Elmore and Candace (Johniken) Rankin in Jacksonville, TX.

He attended Pelican High School, and was a member of the class of 1945, but was drafted into the US Navy before walking to receive his diploma. He served his country in the US Navy from 1945-1946. After being honorably discharged, he went back to school to receive his Masters Degree in History. He married Gertrude Mercer in Louisiana on January 24, 1948.

He worked in many different places across Texas as a school-teacher, before getting involved in administration, and becoming superintendent of schools in Byers, TX. He retired in 1981, and moved to Pelican, LA, where they stayed until 2002, when they moved to Oswego.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Oswego, as well as a member of the Gideon’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Rankin of Oswego; three sons, Daniel F. Rankin, Jr. (wife, Sherry) of Rusk, TX, Frank E. Rankin (wife, Rita) of Bulverde, TX, and Steven E. Rankin (wife, Charlotte) of Washington D.C.; two daughters, Jonnye R. Griffin (husband, Danny) of Anchorage, AK, and Beverly A. Keener (husband, Walter) of Oswego; two brothers, Robert Paul rankin (wife, Phyllis) of Houma, LA, and Donald Rankin (wife, Margie) of Shreveport, LA, as well as 11 grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

The visitation for Mr. Rankin will be held on Monday, February 16, 2015 from 6-8:00 PM at Derfelt Funeral Home of Oswego. Mr. Rankin will then be transported to Louisiana for a formal funeral service on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 10:00 AM, which will take place at Pelican Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Pelican Cemetery. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Gideon’s International in his memory.
