Dr Emilie Virginia Haynsworth, 69, died Saturday.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Charles Haynsworth and Emilie Beattie Haynsworth.

Dr Haynsworth was an honor graduate of Coker College and received her master's degree from Columbia University. She received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina and also received the Warfield Travel Grant to Willson College for further study in 1954.

in 1965, she became a research professor of mathematics at Auburn University, where she was a member of the faculty from 1960 to 1983, when she retired.

She was president of the Southern Mathematical Society and received the distinguished alumnae award from Coker College.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs Thomas W Howell of Sumter; a brother, Perry B Haynsworth of Liberty Corner, NJ; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 am Tuesday at the Church of the Holty Comforter. Burial will be in the Church of the Holy Cross Cemetry at Stateburg.

Pallbearers are Dr Tom Markham of the University of South Carolina mathematics department, and Pat Burton, Bob Grone, Ben Fitzpatrick Jr, Lee Thompson and D R Stocks, all professors in the Auburn University mathematics department.
