WELLS - Clarence Herbert (Sonny) Lombard, 80, was born on March 24, 1934, in Biddeford, to Lillian and Clarence Lombard, and passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 13, 2015, surrounded by his family.

At three years of age, Sonny contracted polio, one of just two cases in the state of Maine at that time. Having the disease damaged his left arm and left him with post-polio symptoms later in life. While it made him ineligible to join the service or play football, it allowed him the life changing opportunity to attend the Pine Tree Camp. The friends Sonny made at camp stuck with him for most of his life and the songs he learned there provided countless hours of fun for his grandchildren.

Sonny grew up in Saco, where he met a blonde named Doris Presby in a fateful ride where Sonny and two friends chased down a car full of lovely women. All three couples later ended up being married. Sonny referred to Doris as his "pride and joy" and their marriage began in an Old Orchard Beach ceremony on Oct. 12, 1957. They had two daughters and spent most of their family vacations at race tracks across the country.

Sonny managed the Maine State Liquor store in Kennebunk, and then moved to Vermont where he opened C.F. Hathaway Shirt Stores before returning to the Wells store. Following his work in sales, he finished his career with the Maine Turnpike Authority.

Sonny's passions included hunting, primarily at the family hunting camp surrounded by friends and family and Moose Hunts in Northern Maine. He looked forward to an annual pilgrimage to Saratoga, N.Y. to bet on the ponies each summer, and took great pride in teaching his grandchildren how to handicap. Sonny made the 12 hour drive every year with few exceptions right up until this past August. Sonny was a fixture in the town of Wells for many years and could often be found with his cronies at McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts or George's Pizza House. Sonny enjoyed attending High School sporting events and was frequently cheering in the stands.

When Sonny's dementia progressed to the point he could no longer care for himself, he moved in with his oldest daughter Kim and her husband Joey, who lovingly cared for him with the assistance of nurses Jan Tracy and Jan D'Alto. Hospice of Southern Maine provided additional compassionate support in his last few weeks of life.

Sonny was predeceased by his parents; his wife Doris; his sister Ruth Dionne, and his brother Norman. He is survived by his sister Roberta Grafen; his daughter Kim and her husband Joey Levesque; his grandchildren Jeff Levesque and wife Kayla, Kacey Levesque and Katey Levesque Druan and husband Jeffrey. Sonny is survived by his great-grandchild Jackson and will be embracing his new title of Guardian Angel for Sadie and Lincoln, due to arrive in February and July, respectively. Also surviving is his youngest daughter, Krissy and her husband Gene Doughty.

A period of visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, with prayers at 1:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary's Church in Wells with Fr. Thomas Murphy officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells.
