" Yesterday, [William A. Bruns] was arraigned in Portland District Court in the murder of his 48-year-old wife, [Pearl Bruns]. Her body was discovered Friday, 13 months after she was reported missing, buried in a crawl space in the Brunses' South Portland home. William Bruns had continued to live in the home after his wife disappeared and through three earlier police searches.
On Friday, in a meticulous search of nearly 500 square feet of cellar, the device pinpointed two small search areas. One contained the body of Pearl Bruns, which was unearthed from a grave nearly 3 feet deep by [Michael Harriman] and Detective Patrick Lehan, also of the State Police.
Asked if that was viewed as a clue, Harriman said yesterday, "We pay extremely close attention" to such comments. In a Dec. 17, 1991, search, a dog directed police to the earthen crawl space but could not pinpoint a spot at which to begin digging. Harriman said that the plastic wrap on the body might have hindered the dog's efforts."
