Our loving husband, father, and grandfather, Gordon H. Barnes, passed away on February 7, 2015 at the age of eighty-nine following a brief illness.

Gordon was born in Ogden on August 8, 1925. The third of four sons of Mark Irl Barnes and Catherine Mabel Hadley, Gordon was a child of the depression era.

His family moved often in the search for work, but they ultimately settled in Salt Lake City, where Gordon graduated from South High School.

Although times were tough, Gordon credited this time with helping him and his brothers learn to adapt and rely on each other.

As a member of the 20th Armored Division, Gordon proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II. At the young age of nineteen, he participated with members of his division in liberating the Dachau concentration camp.

Upon returning home, he began working in sales, but ultimately found himself at Prudential Federal Savings and Loan (PFS). Starting as a teller, he rose to the level of Vice President of Mortgage Loan Servicing by the end of his career.

He met his wife, Enid Swenson, while working at PFS. They were married on July 5, 1958 and subsequently sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 7, 1973.

Gordon continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He represented PFS as a sponsor working with the youth in the Junior Achievement program, helping them to create and run award winning companies.

He was also active in the LDS Church, fulfilling ward and stake callings over the course of his life.

Most of all, Gordon enjoyed spending time with family and we will always remember his influence in the home. We loved the fun road trips and visits to Disneyland and Sun Valley.

We loved listening to him play the piano, a talent he picked up after only one lesson. He shared his artistic capabilities, patiently teaching children and grandchildren.

He taught us the value of hard work through his example. And he taught us to enjoy life and not take ourselves too seriously. We will miss his kind spirit and the gentle humor he retained through his final days.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Ann Barnes Deaux, and her husband, Louis E. Deaux; brother, Ward H. Barnes, and his wife, Kaye Morris Barnes; son-in-law, Darrin John Berg; and grandchildren, John-David, Christian McKay, and Elizabeth Grace Berg; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Enid; daughter, Diane Barnes Berg; and brothers, Mark H. Barnes and his wife, Ann Dillon "Stan" Barnes, and Clyde Hadley Barnes and his wife, Bessie Lu Harwood Barnes.

The family wishes to thank Anthony, Peg, Joseph, and other great caregivers at Sunrise of Holladay as well as Jolene and the team at Solstice for their care and kindness in Gordon's final weeks.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 in the Olympus Cove Ward Chapel, 4176 Adonis Drive, Millcreek Township. The funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
