John Richard Hooper was born on January 25, 1849 in Tennessee, the son of George J Hooper (1822–1910) and Elizabeth Louisa (Carner) Hooper (1824–1893).

He was married 1st on August 1869 in Dickson County to Salina Eudora Nicks (1853-1932), the daughter of Absalom Doak Nicks (1826–1904) and Margaret Sophia (Blocker) Nicks (1829–1918). John was married 2nd marriage was about 1896 to Margarette Marina Elizabeth "Rena" (Berry) Cearley (1856-1941), the daughter of Reverend Michael T Berry (1803–1888) and his wife Nancy Sarah A (Nesbitt) Berry (1825–1889). Rena had been married previously to Sion Harrington Cearley.

A blacksmith and later a wagon master/builder and living at 611 49th Avenue North, Nashville, John was 72 years old and married when he died at home of nephritis on January 14, 1923. According to his Death Certificate, he was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, but apparently that was incorrect, as his cemetery marker is in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.

Most of the above is from his Death Certificate, with Mrs John R Hooper of 611 49th Avenue North as the informant.

Known children of John and Salina:
~ Emma Hooper (ca 1872- )
~ Absalom Hooper (ca 1873- )
~ Maggie Hooper (ca 1876- )
~ James M "Jim" Hooper (1877-1940)

Stepchildren of John include:
