James Houston Tartt, 87, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on February 11, 2015, at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove.
He was born in Wilmington, NC (Seagate Community) on June 12, 1927, son of the late Thomas Abner Tartt and Mattie Lillian Norris Tartt.
Mr. Tartt retired from Sears & Roebuck Company with twenty-seven years of service. He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army Air Force and a member of Wilmington First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He loved horses and was a longtime member of the Seagate Saddle Club. For many years he (and his family) would go to the Falcon Youth Camp in Falcon, NC, where he would be in charge of the horses and help the youth learn to ride. He also loved to play Santa Claus for local nursing homes and schools. For several years in his youth, Mr. Tartt worked alongside his father doing gardening at Airlie Gardens.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Helen Futrell Tartt; daughter, Dianne Kennedy Twiggs and husband Jim of Goldsboro, NC; grandchildren, Lynne Twiggs Rose and husband Rev. Bill Rose, Jennifer Twiggs Loftin and husband Bryan, Rene Kennedy Hall and husband Myka, Becky Kennedy Skaggs and husband David; Erik Kennedy and wife Nohelia, and Cody Kennedy; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Wendy Kennedy of Castle Hayne.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Tartt was preceded in death by two sons, Herbert Eugene Kennedy and Ronald Lee Kennedy; a grandson, Sean Kennedy; and siblings, Abner, Lewis, James”Sweetie”, Shirley, Juliett, and Ann.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Wilmington First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2901 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, with Pastor Rodney Knowles and Pastor Paul Evans officiating. Interment will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
