NEW MIDDLETOWN – Kathryn M. Stewart, 92, passed away peacefully, with her niece, Sheri, by her side, on Dec. 31, 2014, one day short of her 93rd birthday, at the Masternick Memorial Health Care Center in New Middletown.

Kathryn was born in Villa Maria, Pa., on Jan. 1, 1922, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Stroney) Mauser. She was one of 10 children.

She graduated from Hubbard High School in 1940. After graduation, Kathryn went on to become a hairdresser. Knowing that she wanted more from life, she up and moved to Washington, D.C., where she landed a job at a local radio/television station. While in D.C., she was set up for a blind date, and it was then that she met the love of her life, Francis C. Stewart. They were united in marriage on Nov. 17, 1956.

Kathryn and Francis lived life to the fullest, enjoying endless rounds of golf at many country clubs, cocktail and dinner parties with tons of friends, travels throughout the United States and other world countries, and especially held dear all of the family gatherings, such as the Mauser Open and Mauser Reunion, for which they made the trip back home to Youngstown each July.

Her husband preceded her in death in 2001, as the result of a tragic motor vehicle accident en route back to Virginia from California.

She spent most of her life in the Washington, D.C./Virginia area, where she worked for the U.S. Government in the Geographical Department as a secretary. After retirement, Kathryn and her husband made multiple moves to various locations, including a short time in Canfield, and few years in Roseville, Calif. After his unfortunate death, Kathryn returned to Virginia. From there, she moved again to Placentia, Calif., until February of 2008, when she realized it was time to be closer to family, so she moved to New Middletown, where she resided until her passing.

Kathryn leaves one brother, Bernard (Marion) Mauser of Liberty. She is also survived by one sister, Nancy, and brother-in-law Richard “Dick” Stevens of New Middletown, who meant the world to her for all of their love, concerns and countless ways that they expressed true family relations with her throughout the years.

She also leaves to cherish memories, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and especially Sheri (Jay) Cunningham, Richard (Holly) Stevens, Lisa (Don) Wharry and Tom (Nancy) Lucas, who made endless visits, took trips to the casino with her, and always included her in all of their family gatherings, but most importantly were there to be her constant caregivers to help meet all of her needs over the past few years.

“Aunt K,” as she was known by many, will be forever remembered for her witty sense of humor and compassionate ways. A moment never went by without her having something kind to say to all, no matter if she knew you for life, or she just met you for the first time. She embraced life to the fullest and especially loved her condo; her car, Buddy Buick; trips to the Mountaineer Casino to play video poker; family get-togethers; and her daily glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

She will truly be missed by all of those who knew her, especially her family. The family finds comfort knowing that she no longer suffers and now rests in peace. They celebrate also knowing that she got to spend New Year’s Eve and her 93rd birthday in the fanciest place possible with the love of her life and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Besides her parents and her husband, Kathryn was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, Edward, Albert and Joseph; and sisters Eleanor Lucas, Geraldine Hosa, and Dorothy Welker-Staudmeister.

“The family so chose Valentine’s Day for her service as a tribute to the love that ‘Aunt K’ showed to all and for all the loved we shared as one.”

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., where Kathryn will be laid to rest next to her husband.
