He was born on June 4, 1926, to George and Ida Berry of Fresno, CA. He grew up in Sanger where he attended the one room schoolhouse Lonestar and the Sanger High School. He graduated from Sanger High School in 1944, and then joined the United States Navy. He went to Boot Camp June 12, 1944, in Ferragut, ID. He served in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class until May 22, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He served on the USS Coos Bay and the USS Mackinac.

In 1948, he attended the California Highway Patrol Academy at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Jeanne Andreis, thanks to Vernon Black who was also in the academy. He invited Ernest to join his wife, Betty and her sister, Jeanne to the State Fair. Ernest joined the California Highway Patrol in 1948, and was assigned to the Fresno area. He was a Traffic Officer for 30 years, 1948 to 1978.

In 1966, he became the Accident Investigator, a Special Duty Assignment which he loved. On June 18, 1950, he married the love of his life, Jeanne Andreis of Clovis. They were married for 57 magnificent years and had three children Jeff, Jon and Suzanne. Ernest was a member of California State Employees Association, SIRS, Clovis Big Dry Creek Historical Society and Friends of Henry Madden library.

He was a Bank of America courier for 15 years after retirement from Calfornia Highway Patrol, so he and Jeanne could do extensive traveling. They loved to travel seeing 30 of the 50 states and about 36 countries. Ernest was a hard working man all of his life, who loved his family with all of his heart. He was stubborn yet funny, strict yet fair, loving and caring. He was a great man with a big heart who will be missed dearly by all the knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ida Berry; Jeanne, his loving wife of 57 years; and sons, Jon and Jeff.
