The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Jackie was born on July 3, 1938, in Stokes County to the late Everette and Hallie Joyce Hawkins.
He was a US Army veteran and retired from RJR in 1992 with 32 years of service. He was very active in his community and helped establish the Northeast Stokes Volunteer Fire Department and was its first fire chief. He remained a member for 35 years. He also helped establish the Community Bank and the Sandy Ridge Ruritan Club. He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, a member of the NC Baptist Lay Witness Foundation where he was the coordinator for thirty-eight years. He coordinated many mission trips to states all over the U.S. and Hawaii, especially West Virginia and South Dakota. His love in life was telling others about Christ.
Jackie also loved bluegrass gospel music. He played a mandolin and sang in the band “Jackie and Friends”. He was very excited about the establishment of the Sandy Ridge Music Association of which he was a board member.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, James and Oren Hawkins; sisters, Polly Priddy and Peggy Ann Hawkins; brothers-in-law, Curtis and S.G. “Junior” Priddy; and sister-in-law, Ruth Hawkins.
Survivors include his wife, Ollie Jean Shelton Hawkins; sons, Dwight Lee Hawkins (Betty) of Sandy Ridge and Randall Lynn Hawkins (Anita) of Mayodan; a sister, Lois Priddy of Danbury; grandchildren, Lee Ann Hawkins Craig (Michael) and Cassandra Hawkins; and great-grandchildren, Milly and Cooper Craig; brother and sister-in-law, Edgar “Tubby” and Jacqueline Priddy.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday February 13, 2015, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church and other times at the residence.
