Lutheran pastor at Middletown, MD 1843-1844; Hanover, PA 1848-1849; Zion Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, PA 1849-1865; Christ Church, Gettysburg, PA 1866-1892. Professor at Gettysburg College and Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, PA 1844-1848 and 1865-1893. Withdrew from the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1857 and joined the East Pennsylvania Synod, becoming its president in 1860 and again in 1874. He also became the president of the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States of America in 1881. He served as curator of the Historical Society of the Lutheran Church's library beginning in 1869. He wrote numerous books on Biblical and Lutheran theology as well as Lutheran biographies.
