Julia Louisa Matilda Woodruff (maiden name Curtiss), also known by the pseudonym W. M. L. Jay (being a reversal of her initials and with the letter J made into Jay), was born on 29 April 1832 in Newtown, Connecticut, as a daughter of Nirom E. Curtiss and Matilda Curtiss (maiden name Rogers). She married Curtiss T. Woodruff on 10 February 1849 and resided in New York City. She became a writer, a poet, and a compiler of books. She is known as the author of “Shiloh” (1870), “My Winter in Cuba” (1871), “Holden with the Cords (1876),” “He Giveth Songs” (1881) “Daisy Seekers” (1885), “Life’s Sunny Side” (1886), and “Bellevue” (1891), among other works.
