GREENSBORO- Mr. Van Sheridan Berckman, 73, of 2207 Yanceyville Street, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Berckman's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Forbis & Dick North Elm Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

Van Berckman was born in Guilford County on Feb. 22, 1932, to the late James H. and Othalia Bozeman Berckman. He was retired from Piedmont Airlines and attended the Presbyterian Church of the Cross. Mr. Berckman was a mason and member of Revolution Lodge #552; Cone Post #386 American Legion; and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, an avid golfer and football fan.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jane Forrest Berckman of the home; daughter Joy Berckman Calhoun and her husband, Don of Myrtle Beach; sisters, Gypsie C. Berckman and Joan Berckman Sheppard of Lynchburg, Va.; brothers, Edwin Berckman of Greensboro and Douglas C. Berckman of Gastonia; and a granddaughter, Nikki Calhoun of Myrtle Beach.
