Phyllis Jean Cavender was born in Pueblo, Colorado on April 23, 1931. She died on April 3, 2007 at the age of 75 in the comfort of her Las Cruces home surrounded by her family. Her father, William Crockett and her mother, Viola Pearl Cavender, preceded her in death.
Phyllis was a 1950 Pueblo Centennial High School graduate where she enjoyed many friends and activities and ran with the "Eastside Gang", her group of neighborhood friends. She married Robert (Bob) Langford on July 19, 1952. They moved to Ruidoso, NM in 1957 and remained there until 1976 when they moved to Las Cruces, NM. She was active in her church and Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Her working life included a Ma Bell plug-in phone operator and a lifeguard in Pueblo, an office career at Sierra Blanca Motors, and an escrow officer at Security Bank in Ruidoso. She enjoyed the public and meeting new people. She truly never met a stranger.
Phyllis blessed this world with an amazing legacy of which she was quite proud. This legacy includes her husband, Bob Langford of Las Cruces and three daughters: Roxie and her husband, Bob Cameron,
Diorly and her husband, Darrel Stierwalt all of Ruidoso and Barbara Langford of Las Cruces. Eleven grandchildren: Jerrod and Kelsey Stierwalt, Kristi Bergeron, Heath Keck, Dana and Shane Holder and Dari Stierwalt all of Ruidoso, Kim Bergeron of NY, and Bobbie, Jake and Ashley Dorman of CA. Seven great-grandchildren: Daniel and Dakota Montes, Brianna and Riley Holder, Joseph and Ryan Hughes and Ariana Keck all of Ruidoso. Siblings: Bill Cavender, Richard Cavender, Diana Weaver and Teresa Smith.
In-laws: Wayne and Leanita Langford of Roswell, Eugene and Juanita Langford from NC, Mary Jo Cavender and Betty Cavender of Pueblo; Nieces and Nephews: Raymond Langford (adopted son), Teresa Irvin, Jerry Langford, Steve and Becky Cavender, Gail Weber, Lori Beamon, Rick Cavender, and Sherri and Ramona Langford; plus many great nieces, nephews and cousins.
She met life's challenges and adversities with a strength and determination that was admired. Her joys were simple: from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass to John Philip Sousa marches, from jalapenos to sauerkraut, from road trips to coffee on the front porch, and being the #1 Dallas Cowboy fan. Phyllis encouraged everyone to live life to its fullest and have 'fun'.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 2:00 at the First Christian Church in Ruidoso, NM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to:
First Christian Church Children's Fund, PO Box 2475, Ruidoso, NM 88355.
