Joined Missouri State Guard in 1861 then 3rd Battalion Missouri Cavalry and fought to Corinth, MS where he lost his left arm in battle 10/1862, taken POW north until 4/63 and exchanged to Vicksburg, where he lost his left leg in battle and again taken POW at its fall. Remained a POW until 2/1865 and made his way home.
