Mrs. Rebecca J. Holmes

Mrs. Rebecca J. Holmes, relict of the late John N. Holmes, and sister of the Hon. Willard Johnson, of Fulton, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. M.M. Beeman, 206 Ash street, Syracuse, yesterday, after a long and painful illness, in the 70th year of her age.

The deceased was born in Vernon, Windham County, Vermont, April 18, 1813, and was the eldest daughter of the Hon. Lovewell Johnson, deceased, late of Fulton, Oswego County, N.Y. Her immediate surviving relatives are her brother, Hon. Willard Johnson of Fulton, her sister, Mrs. Augustus M. Freeman, of Syracuse, her son, John N. Holmes of Cleveland, Ohio, her daughter, Mrs. M.M. Beeman of Syracuse, her grandsons, Prof. W. Newton Holmes of Stanton(?), John L. Holmes of Chicago, and Frank E. Holmes, of Buffalo, N.Y.

Mrs. Holmes was educated at the Mexico Academy, at Cazenovia Seminary and completed her studies at Mrs. Willard's Female Seminary at Troy, N.Y. She was a lady of rare intellectual gifts, of sterling character, of genial associations and made lasting friendships in her wide circle of acquaintances and with her patience, firmness, and Christian fortitude awaited the final summons. Funeral service will be held at her late residence Syracuse, Saturday, the 28th inst., at 11:15 A.M. and also funeral services and burial in the afternoon at 2 o'clock at Central Square, N.Y.
