Susie B. Anderson, 73, of St. Joseph, died early Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Gilead Elder Care in St. Joseph.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at the Fairplain Seventh-day Adventist Church in Benton Harbor, where friends visited with the family prior to the service. Pastor Dan Rachor officiated. Burial will be in the Mitchell Baptist Church Cemetery in Louisburg, North Carolina. Memorial contributions in Susie's name may be made to the Asia ASAP Project or to Reach International. Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs is serving the family.

Susie was born on December 14, 1933, in Henderson, North Carolina, the youngest of five children of Thomas and Magnolia (Mitchell) Anderson. She grew up in the difficult political climate of the deep South in the 1930's. Surviving in these times molded her and taught her some very vital lessons for life. As a result of her childhood, Susie was not a stranger to hard work, and executed her duties to near perfection. She embraced her challenges with stubborn determination and labored to instill this work ethic in her children. In the late 1950's she left North Carolina to explore work opportunities in Brooklyn, New York, where she owned a small yet very successful grocery store for many years. In addition to this, she landed jobs in the restaurant industry, home health care industry, and domestic cleaning services. She was never too busy to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate in the inner city of New York. In November 1998 she was needed to help take care of her newborn granddaughter Alexis, so she moved to Michigan. She joined the fellowship of the Fairplain Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she met many new friends and served as a greeter and hostess.

She leaves her five children to mourn: Howard Anderson, Carol Richardson MD, Evette McGill, Wayman McGill, and Marcus McGill; two grandchildren: Duane Smith and Alexis Richardson; her only surviving sibling, Mary Etta Terry; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
