Birt Tyler Dies Near Henderson

Birt Tyler, 97, veteran Henderson Harbor fishing guide and boat builder and one of the oldest residents of Northern New York, died July 25, 1954 at his home. Despite his advanced age he was in fairly good health until recently.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the Pidock funeral home in Adams, with burial at Roberts Corners.

Surviving are one son, Herbert A. Tyler, a fishing guide at Henderson Harbor; a granddaughter, Miss Barbara Tyler; a sister, Mrs. Etta Chapman, 94, of Watertown, and nieces and nephews. The late Dr. Harry E. Tyler, a dentist at Adams, was another son.

Family were Weavers

Mr. Tyier was the son of Elman and Cynthia Smith Tyler and the grandson of Harry Tyler, the originator of the famous "Tyler Coverlet." The father, Elman, also did weaving. The Tyler homestead where Harry Tyler wove his spreads is still located at Buttervllle between Smithville and Roberts Corners.

Birt Tyler married Miss Harriet E. Moody of Henderson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. Moody of Pulaski, on January 10, 1884. She died October 16, 1946.

Mr. Tyler was skilled in wood carving and boat building, and enjoyed gardening. At Henderson Harbor the Tylers had a boat livery and a summer boarding house. He was actively interested in the Henderson Fish and Game Protective association and in the Henderson Harbor Yacht club as well as community affairs. He frequently attended the Sandy Creek Fair, and in a broadcast from the grounds in 1944 said he had attended the fair for 35 consecutive years.
