GEORGE H. CHAPMAN IS CALLED IN DEATH

George H. Chapman died Tuesday night at the Sacred Heart hospital of peritonitis. He had been at the hospital for about two weeks but was not considered seriously ill until a few days before his death. He leaves a wife and two children, also two brothers, Lawrence G. of Bellingham, Wash., and Page of New York. The funeral will take place Friday morning at 8:30 at St. Patrick’s church.

Mr. Chapman returned to this city from Stanley a few months ago and had planned to reside here. The following tribute is paid him by the editor of the Stanley Republican:

STANLEY, May 10 – George H. Chapman, for seventeen years general manager of the Northwestern Lumber company’s business at this place and for three years during the war mayor of Stanley, died last night at Sacred Heart hospital in Eau Claire, aged 55 years. His death resulted from peritonitis following an operation for appendicitis, performed on Wednesday of last week.

He is survived by a widow, who was Miss Harriet Hubbard of Eau Claire, and two children, a boy and a girl, aged about fifteen and ten years respectively. He was the eldest son of General and Mrs. G. H. Chapman of Indianapolis, his father being a distinguished veteran of the civil War and a well known jurist of the State of Indiana…

Mr. Chapman was elected mayor of Stanley in the spring of 1917 to fill an unexpired term, and was reelected to a full two year term a year later. As mayor of the city during war time and during the fearful flu epidemic, he became a commanding figure in local affairs...
