John Slemmons was born in Kentucky. His parents moved to 'Texas when he was a young boy. Some years later he met Mira Bottoms, who lived near Lone Oak., a little town in Hunt County. They married on March 12, 1893. He had a home and already had his crop started when they married. He was not as much of a farmer as he was a stockman. He loved livestock, and spent most of his time buying & selling cattle. Since he had no vehicle to haul cattle he would rope the cow, or yearling, he bought & drive, or lead, it home behind his horse. He would bring it home "on the rope"" as they said then. These cattle were kept in a rented field, or pasture, until a carload was collected. Then he would request a railcar, & ship a carload to the Ft. Worth stockyards for sale. He loved horses, but would not own or ride, a pacing horse. He traded horses & mules also. John & Mira raised 6 children. Four babies died in infancy. They were both Methodist, & their children were raised in the Methodist Church in Hunt County. The children were as follows: Jesse - (married Bessie Keegan, deceased); Fannie - (married Willie England, deceased); Clora - (married Fred Mayhall deceased); Lou - (married Omer Mallory, deceased); William - (married Leona Evans, both deceased); Mary Sue - (married Amos Knight). There were 13 Grandchildren....
