John M. Tatum was a member of the Fourth Texas Infantry. He died of Febris Typhoidis in a Richmond hospital and is buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery. He is the subject of the book Never to Return Home, John M. Tatum and the Fourth Texas Infantry Regiment, written by his great-grandson Colonel Timothy C. Tatum.

John Tatum was married to Margaret Emerick (1825-1861) and was the father of Margaret and James Tatum.
