Mrs. Rebecca Smith Hodges, age 95, of Oconee, died Monday, February 9, 2015, at the Washington County Extended Care Facility. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 11TH, at 11:00 a.m. at the Antioch Christian Church in Oconee with burial in the Church Cemetery. The Reverend Tom Howard will officiate. Mrs. Hodges’ grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as her pallbearers.
Mrs. Hodges was born in Butts County the daughter of the late William Alford Smith and the late Lillian Ethel Leverette Smith. She was an educator beginning her career at Indian Springs in Butts County prior to moving to teach in Oconee in the early 1940’s where she met her husband Donald Herbert Hodges, Sr. who predeceases her along with her nine siblings. She finished her career teaching at both Washington County High School and T.J. Elder Jr. High School. Mrs. Hodges was an active member of the Oconee community as a member of the Antioch Christian Church where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and also by serving as Oconee’s first female Mayor Pro-tem in 1988. She served as the Chairperson for the Washington County Library Board and also the 1st Vice President of the Regional Library Board. Mrs. Hodges was a Christian Life Center volunteer.
Mrs. Hodges is survived by her children, Donna H. Pope and her husband Braxton of Atlanta, D. Herbert Hodges Jr. and his wife Martina of Oconee, and Sherri H. Harris and her husband Cyrus of Deepstep; grandchildren, Rebecca P. Coppedge and her husband John, Nancy P. Glass and her husband Mike, Chris H. Hodges and his wife Alecia, Grace H. Moore and her husband Roger, Ruth H. Clark and her husband Casey, C. Thomas Harris and his wife Julie and Sarah Grace Harris; and eleven-great grandchildren.
The family suggests donations be made to the Antioch Christian Church, P. O. Box 40, Oconee, Georgia 31067.
The family will be at the residence of Herbert and Martina Hodges in Oconee, and they will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
