Dr. Peters had served as pastor at several Evangelical and Reformed churches in the area until his retirement from the active ministry three years ago. He had also been an instructor at Temple University.
Two weeks ago he preached at two services in Slatington UCC and helped serve communion in Faith UCC, Allentown.
Rev. Peters was born in Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, the son of the late John F. and Emma (Wotring) Peters.
He attended J. P. Deibert Private School, Schnecksville, and taught two years in elementary school at Lehigh Gap.
In 1903, Rev. Peters was graduated from Ursinus College, Collegeville. He started his theological training at the Ursinus School of Theology and completed his course at Central Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, receiving a bachelor of divinity degree in 1917.
He completed his work on a doctor of sacred theology degree in 1928 at Temple University.
Among his charges were Emanuel Evangelical and Reformed, Lansford; Grace-St. Stephen's, Lebanon; St. Stephen's, Perkasie; Trinity, Shenandoah; and Christ Church, Greenawalds.
His last charge, at Lansford, was started in 1950. He retired in 1956.
Rev. Peters was a member of St. James UCC, Allentown; Shenandoah Lodge 511, F&AM; Lebanon Lodge, IOOF, and Scottish Rite Masons, Bloomsburg.
Surviving are his wife, the former M. Gertrude Beers; four daughters, Ruth H., wife of Isaac R. Knoll, Edgewater Park, N.J.; Miriam L., wife of Atty. Elvin Jones, Pottsville; Mary E., wife of George Flexer, Allentown; and Jeanne, wife of Dr. George Hutter, Wilkes-Barre; three brothers, Herbert W. E., Slatington; Dr. Rollo O., Slatedale; and Wallace H., Allentown; two sisters, Emma M., wife of Paul K. Bachman; and Grace M., wife of John Christman, both of Allentown; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Xenia Hellfrich, and two brothers, Sidney and Dr. Warren Peters.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. James UCC, 15th and Walnut Sts., Allentown. Viewing will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 Highland St., Allentown.
