Mrs. Henrietta M. Dowd, wife of Capt. James C. Dowd, died yesterday morning at 11 o'clock at her home near the city. For a year or more Mrs. Dowd had been a great sufferer. She went to Richmond once for treatment but returned little benefitted. For a week or more her family has realized that the end was drawing nigh, but it came with no terror to her. She pillowed her head on the "Rock of Ages," and with her faith clear and strong, put her hand forth into her Savior's, and stepped out into earth's darkness, but into the light of eternal day.
Mrs. Dowd was 52 years of age. She was married when young, and came to Charlotte to live. She was a woman of great strength of character; strong and yet kind, charitable and lovable. She spent her life in the service of her husband and children; all of whom were present at her bedside.
Deceased was the mother of Mr. W. C. Dowd, editor of the News, and of Mr. W. F. Dowd. She leaves besides these eight other children. The funeral services will be conducted from Tryon Street Baptist church this morning at 10 o'clock. The deacons of the church will act as pall-bearers. The latter will meet at the square at 8'oclock, and go to the house. The funeral procession is expected to reach the city at 9:30.
