James was the son of Elisha Boucher and Sarah English, born in 1824 in Tennessee. When he was 3 the family moved to Ray County, Missouri, then settled in Sampsel, Livingston, Missouri. When War with Mexico was declared, James with his brother, Joshua, joined a company raised by William Y Slack, of Chillicothe, and fought in the 2nd Missouri Volunteers under Sterling Price, when he was military commander of the Territory of New Mexico. James died in action during the Taos Riot; his body was brought home to the family plot at Gibbons Cemetery. Unfortunately, his brother Joshua preceded him in death during an action Oct 1846.
