Army Sgt. Jeremiah J. Boehmer of Parkston, South Dakot stood out from the crowd, wearing shorts to school every day of his senior year, a stunt that became well known around town. With his diploma, but with little clue about what should happen next, a close friend helped to steer him toward the military. He grew up playing with toy soldiers and joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps in high school before joining the Army in November 2002. Jeremiah died at age 22 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Stryker Engineer Squad Vehicle.
