Delmar was the son of William Harder and Alice Every Harder. He was raised at Delhi where his father was a farmer. As a young man, he was interested in automobiles and worked at a local auto shop. His father thought his interest foolish as the horse and buggy would always be the main way to get from one place to another. Delmar relocated to New York City in 1915 to follow his dreams. He married to Kathleen Lesley Smith on 11 September 1915 at Manhattan, New York. She was a typist when she emigrated from England in 1912. Delmar and Lesley had one child, Lucille, who married to Eldon Langbauer. Delmar worked for Chevrolet Motor Company and later at Ford Motor Company where he rose in rank to executive vice-president. The family relocated several times in the course of Delmar’s career. Besides Manhattan, they resided at Janesville, Wisconsin; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Dearborn, Michigan; and Detroit.
