The son of Jacob B. & Susanna Garber, in 1860 he was a student living with his family in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster July 13, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 17 as a private with Co. C, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 4, 1864.
After the war, he graduated from Millersville Normal School, Lafayette College, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
The cemetery in which he supposedly lies has been reported as a plowed field, so the whereabouts of his remains are a mystery.
