Moses Jumper, Seminole Tribe Founder, Dies
January 30, 1992|By BOB FRENCH, Staff Writer
Moses Jumper Sr. grew up in the swamps west of Fort Lauderdale to become an alligator wrestler, a founder of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the first Seminole Indian to serve in the U.S. Navy.

Today, Mr. Jumper will receive military and Indian honors as he is laid to rest at the New Seminole Indian Cemetery at the tribe`s reservation near Hollywood. Mr. Jumper, 65, died on Monday at Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

``He did a lot of things. He loved to hunt out in the Everglades. He probably loved it more than any other place,`` said his son Moses Jumper Jr., the tribe`s recreation director who has also published a book of poetry.

One of the first Seminole U.S. military veterans, Mr. Jumper served in the Navy during World War II as a frogman, said Mr. Jumper`s wife, Betty Mae Jumper.

``He had worked on a lot of ships,`` she said.

Seminole legend says Mr. Jumper guided Allied submarines through enemy lines because of his experience in getting canoes through the 10,000 islands in southwest Florida.

``He had a natural homing skill,`` Seminole tribal spokesman Pete Gallagher said.

But Mr. Jumper rarely spoke of his wartime exploits.

``A buddy was killed in front of him,`` said Laura Mae Osceola, Mr. Jumper`s sister. ``He had to use Indian medicine when he got back.``

Mr. Jumper was a descendant of Confederate Lt. Col. John Jumper, Moses Jumper Jr. said. He was also descended from Chief Jumper, one of the last Seminole Indian leaders to resist federal efforts to oust the tribe from Florida during the Seminole Wars in the 1800s, Moses Jumper Jr. said.

The elder Mr. Jumper grew up west of then-small-town Fort Lauderdale in woods that were near what is now the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, east of Interstate 95 on Broward Boulevard.
