Mrs. Sallie Ball Laid To Rest Last Sunday

Sarah Ellen McClure, daughter of Solomon and Martha Baker McClure, was born in Anderson County, Kentucky, October 22, 1862, and passed away at her home in Jonesburg after a lingering illness on April 17, 1943.

She came to Missouri with her parents at the age of six months, making the trip over land in a covered wagon during the Civil War. The family settled on Brush Creek, near Bellflower, and lived there and on a farm near Price's Branch for several years, then went to Fayetteville, Ark., and later to Springfield, Mo., where they resided for many years. Due to Mrs. McClure's failing health, they returned to Montgomery County and the deceased lived in Jonesburg until her marriage to D.A. Ball of Texas on March 14, 1894, in St. Louis, the ceremony being performed by Rev. W.B. Palmore, a special friend. After a number of years residence in Texas, Mrs. Ball and husband and his young daughter, Stella, came to Missouri to reside, and Jonesburg has been her home ever since. She had lived in her present home about twenty years.

Mrs. Ball was associated with the public a long time through her work as seamstress and in the operating of the Midland Hotel. In whatever line of work she engaged, she made many friends, for she was keenly interested in people. Kindly, sympathetic and generous, and ever ready to lend a helping hand, especially in times of sickness and sorrow, Mrs. Ball endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact. She united with the Christian Church in girlhood under the ministry of Rev. Headington and for years had been an active member of the Ladies Aid Society of the Jonesburg Christian Church. She was interested and active in all civic enterprises as long as her health permitted her to engage in them. With no immediate family, she cared much for others, including a young stepdaughter, now Mrs. G.C. Hart of Cleburne, Texas, whom she helped to rear; also her aged father in his latter years, two sisters, one of whom, Mrs. Hattie Godfrey, became crippled, and Mrs. H.S. Rittenhouse, much of the time in frail health. She was also devoted to a number of nieces and nephews, with some of whom she generously shared her home. Her husband preceded her in death 35 years ago.

She leaves her devoted sister, Mrs. Rittenhouse, last of a family of seven; five daughters and two sons, who grew to maturity; two step-daughters, a stepson, nephews, nieces and many other relatives and a host of friends.

"Miss Sallie" or "Aunt Sallie," as she was familiarly and affectionately known, held a unique place in the life of Jonesburg and in the esteem and affections of kindred and friends. She will be sadly missed by all, it will be lonesome without her warm and cheery welcome as they visited her and called frequently at her home, but all will look forward to meeting her in a better land where there is no pain or affliction.

Funeral services were held at her home Sunday afternoon with Rev. Z. Glen Jones of town officiating. A ladies quartet, composed of Mesdames F.J. Boehmer, W.E. Engel, Vivian Mills and F.T. Ball, sang "Death is Only a Dream" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul." Mrs. R.W. Skinner, an intimate friend, read the sketch of Mrs. Ball's life. There were a number of beautiful floral pieces, some of which were carried by members of the Christian Ladies Aid Society, of which she had long been a member. Pallbearers were E.B. Harding, F.T. Ball, Tony Haselroth, Wm. Van Studdiford, R.W. Skinner and George Engel. Her body was tenderly laid to rest in the Jonesburg cemetery. The near ones have the sympathy of the town and community in their sad loss and sorrow.
