Sgt. Kelly of Richmond, Maine was born to Barbara Fitzpatrick and Pvt. Dale Kelly, in Stuttgart, Germany, where his father was serving in the Army during the Cold War. Shortly after graduating from Cranston High School, he joined the Rhode Island Air National Guard, 143rd Tactical Airlift Group, as a loadmaster. While serving the first nine years of his military career, he met and married his soulmate, Nancy Cabral, also a member of the 143rd Tactical Airlift Group. They were married on Dec. 20, 1980, at the Church of the Transfiguration in Cranston, R.I. They renewed their vows and everlasting love at their 25th wedding anniversary on Dec. 17, 2005, shortly before his deployment to Iraq. He participated in a youth mission trip to Jamaica through his church, St. Paul's Parish in Brunswick. He went there to help build a community center but ended up treating numerous children with serious illnesses instead. When he got home, his wife said he was ready to pack up their things and move to Jamaica so he could help some more. Kelly was an employee at Bath Iron Works, where he had worked for 14 years. He spent every weekend fixing up his house in Richmond, rushing to get projects done so he knew Nancy would have a good home while he was gone. Other men went to him for marriage advice, because his marriage was so strong. He also recalled the couple's 25th anniversary party in December, at which the couple's kids spoke warmly about their dad. He was predeceased by grandparents James H. and Florence Kelly and Hugh W. and Barbara Fitzpatrick. Dale was 48.
