Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in Emmendingen, Germany, he attended the Karlsruhe Polytechnic School (now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), and embarked on a career as a civil engineer. He took part in the failed German Revolution of 1848-1849, which facilitated his immigration to the United States. Serving as a civil engineer for the Schuylkill Navigation Company when the Civil War started, he enlisted in the Union Army, and was appointed as a Captain of Engineers on the staff of Brigadier General Franz Sigel in September of 1861. On September 12, 1862 he was commissioned as Colonel of the 11th Pennsylvania (1862) Militia, a unit that was called up in response to the Confederate invasion of Maryland during the Antietam Campaign. He led the unit until the threat passed, as was discharged on September 25, 1862. On November 6, 1862 he was commissioned a Colonel and commander of the newly-raised 167th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. During and engagement at Deserted House, Virginia on January 30, 1863, astride his horse, Colonel Knoderer was leading his men when he received a severe wound to his leg. Suffering with "considerable pain", the he was transferred to Suffolk, Virginia where he died of his wounds on February 15, 1863.
