Leading Milwaukee architect and city planner. His parents immigrated from Germany and initally settled in Milwaukee, He was apprenticed to a Milwaukee architect, but in 1879 at the age of 20 he went to work for an architect in California where he stayed for two years. When he returned to Milwaukee he associated with a local firm, then went out on his own until 1890 when he partnered with George Bowman Ferry. Their partnership lasted for twenty-five years. After Mr. Ferry died in 1912,he went into practice with his son, Rubens until 1932. He died ten years later in 1942. At age 24 he married Louisa Wick; they had two childen that lived. Louisa died at age 29 in 1892 from tuberculosis. Mr. Clas spent his later years at the Masonic Home for the Aged at Dousman, WI.
