Dr. Joe Calvin Yelderman, long-time physical for Needville and surrounding areas, known locally as "Dr Joe," died peacefully Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Pine Haven Home in Sugar Land. He was born Sept. 14, 1923 in Rosenberg to James R. Yelderman and Caroline Bredthauer Yelderman.

Dr. Joe was with us for 76 years and is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ada Frances Marsh Yelderman of Needville; three children, Cynthia Jo Squires, Joe C. Yelderman of Waco, and Frances Jo Pelley of Sherman; eight grandchildren, Ryan Squires of San Diego, Calif., Shea Squires, Caroline Squires, Abigail Yelderman, Joe C. Yelderman III, and Logan Yelderman of Waco, Jake and Alex Pelley of Sherman; and two sisters, Caroline Fleming of Rosenberg and Janet Cullis of Rhode Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings: sisters, Norma, Faye, and Pauline Yelderman, and brothers, William, Dr. Gus, Doug, Jake, and Dr. R.L. "Dick" Yelderman.

Dr. Joe was one of the last of the "country doctors" making house calls, delivering babies, and performing surgery at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond. He also served his community through the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, School Board, and the Needville Cotton Warehouse. He was integral in founding the Needville Youth Fair and the Gulf Coast Tribune. He served as a director for Wharton County Junior College, the Bank of West Columbia, and the Land Steward Society.

He owned the Needville Farm and Ranch Supply and served on the Development Board at Baylor University. He attended the University of Texas and graduated from Baylor Medical School. He served his country as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and entered medical school as part of the V-12 program during World War II.

Dr. Joe was known for his love of land and nature. He spent much of his free time planting live oak trees which can be seen in many Needville neighborhoods. He was also active in the Nature Conservancy and contributed to the Institute of Environmental Studies at Baylor University.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, in the First United Methodist Church in Needville. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Davis-Greenlawn Chapel, 3900 B.F. Terry Boulevard at Highway 59, in Rosenberg. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Pallbearers are Joe C. Yelderman Jr., Rod Squires, Scott Pelley, Joe C. Yelderman III, Ryan Squires, and Jake Pelley. Reverend Erskine W. Riveire and George Kuebler presiding.
