Ephraim and Mary Ann (Snyder) Doty ... settled in Defiance county, Ohio, where Mr. Doty engaged in farming until his death. In 1844, Mrs. Doty and eleven of her children came to Linn county, Iowa, leaving a married daughter, Mrs. Rachel Richart, in Ohio. She located in Franklin township, Linn county, where she purchased a tract of government land, which her sons broke and improved. Upon that place she died at the advanced age of eighty-three years. Of her twelve children six are still living.

Adapted from a biographical sketch of son-in-law Peter Kepler in The Biographical Record of Linn County Iowa, 1901, pages 69-71.

Censuses give Mary's birthplace as Virginia, Pennsylvania or Ohio.

The twelve children of Ephraim and Mary seem to have been: Rachel (married Caleb Richart), Kitty Ann, Abner, Mary Ann, Phoebe (married James Holman), Andrew, George, Mahala, Minerva, Ephraim, Ruah and Elizabeth.

Mary is buried in this cemetery next to her son Ephraim.

Per family information this Mary Ann Snyder was the sister of Andrew Snyder buried in the Carter Pioneer Cemetery near Danville, Iowa. Besides Andrew there were a number of other siblings including Adam in Iowa, Hiram and Peter in Indiana. Their parents were George Snyder and probably Rachel Taff who was Andrew's mother. The parents had lived in Pennsylvania as Andrew was born in Penn. but moved into Virginia to farm before moving west as did the others. I think there were more siblings than the ones I have listed.
