Ruth Elaine Stephens, 67 year old Worland, resident, passed away on January 31, 2015 at the Washakie Medical Center, from a sudden illness.

Ruth was born on January 8, 1948 in Tiffin, Ohio to Robert Wayne and Edith Fern (Bell) Palmer, She grew up and received her education in McCutchenville, Ohio.

Ruth and Mark Vincent Stephens eloped on November 26, 1966 in Adrian, Michigan. They lived in Tiffin, Ohio for 11 years before moving to Greybull, Wyoming. Their two sons attended and graduated from Greybull High School. Ruth worked at Ron’s Food Farm for 12 years. In 1990, she decided to complete her dream of becoming a teacher and started attending Casper College’s teaching degree program. She graduated in 1994 and got a job in one of the few remaining “one room school houses” in Wyoming. The school was at Kortes Dam on the North Platte River in Central Wyoming. It is a very rural area and she once had to call her husband home because there was a badger burrowing under the school house. She taught there for two years before returning to the Big Horn Basin.

She taught at West Side Elementary for nearly 20 years. Through that time she touched hundreds of lives and each of those she taught also touched her. She taught Title 1 Math and Reading and was the instructional facilitator for the District. She retired in 2014. Ruth was also the head of the Washakie County Library Board.

She enjoyed reading, camping, grandchildren and attending their sporting activities. She was one of Greybull’s biggest Buff fans. Traveling with her husband Mark and flower gardening were annual affairs. For several summers she also traveled to exotic locations for “girls vacations” with her three sisters. Ruth's family is very musical and growing up she loved to sing hymns with them.

Ruth and her soulmate Mark did things their own way and didn’t listen to neighsayers. They got married at 18, moved to Wyoming when the economy was down, and started attending college in their mid-forties. They ended up being married for forty-nine loving years, made a wonderful life in Wyoming, and retired as teachers.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ruth is survived by her husband Mark of Worland; sons, Mathew (Jennifer) Stephens of Filer, Idaho, Kurt (Diana) Stephens of Greybull, Wyoming; brother: Richard (Kim) Palmer of Findlay, Ohio; sisters: Janet (Bill) Bird of Elyria, Ohio, Carol Castillo of Mercedes, Texas, Helen (Carl) Shinn of McCutchenville, Ohio; brother-in-law: Lee (Laura) Stephens, Albuquerque, New Mexico; sister-in-law: LeMar (Tom) Campbell, Sycamore, Ohio; seven grandchildren: Brett, Bailee, Kendall, Kylin, Cheyenne, Zane, and Carson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
