Dena Honsinger Hill was born in Curtis, Frontier, Nebraska, to J. B. Honsinger and Katie Paul. This was harsh pioneering times as well as railroad life on the prairie.
After her parents divorced, her mother married John E. Hill in 1893. Three children were born, joining Dena. Sadly, her mother, Katie, passed away in January of 1900. The children were quickly placed in care of loving relatives, as John had to work. Dena went on to receive a good education for the times, excelling.
In her own words, "I graduated from Meade, Nebraska High School. I attended Albion State Normal College, which gave me a life-time teaching certificate for the State of Idaho.
I also attended Ricks Normal at Rexburg, Idaho, Idaho State University in Pocatello, and Training for the Blind in Austin, Texas.
I am a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma. I was first President of Pheta Chapter, which was organized in my home; I was State Secretary of D.K.G. for two years.
I taught Public School in Thornton, Pleasant Valley and Excelsior, Idaho, and also the Deaf and Blind School in Gooding, Idaho. The last three years I taught were in the Blind School in Tuscon, Arizona. This finished thirty-nine years in the school room." In 1958, Mrs. Hill was presented the prestigious Barry Goldwater Award, for Teaching/Mentoring with the Blind. Mrs. Hill retired from teaching on June 6, 1960.
At age nineteen, Dena had married John E. Hill, who was by then in his mid-thirties in 1907. They left Nebraska and went west, along with Dena's three half-siblings, Mary, Jim and John, whom they continued to raise. All remained close throughout life. John and Dena later had four children, Effie, Cloy, Margaret Fay, and Ralph. Her memorable teaching career existed along side of being a wife and mother.
"My hobby all my life has been collecting Poetry. Of all the traveling in the U. S., my favorite was the two weeks I spent in Hawaii visiting my granddaughter and her husband."
Dena Hill left a legacy of thankful students, many who went on to achieve highly successful careers and accomplishments. Many of these students were blind.
