Richard Dale Hampton was born May 14, 1925, south of Choctaw, Oklahoma, to Bryan Elijah Hampton and Jessie Clarice Pickett.

At the age of four his family moved their homestead to Northwest 10th and MacArthur where they established a pecan orchard. He spent his youth caring for pecan trees, picking apples, grapes and tending to other typical farm work, ultimately graduating from Putnam City High School in 1943.

As a member of “The Greatest Generation”, he entered the service in 1943, under the 102nd Infantry Division as a line soldier in a light machine squad. His combat duty was in the 9th Army north of Aachen, Germany. While in the infantry, Richard was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and an Honorable Discharge. As part of the Rhineland Campaign – K Company, 405th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 102nd Infantry Division.

In 1946, he returned to Oklahoma City where he attended undergraduate school at Oklahoma City University, and then proceeded directly to law school. Richard graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1950 with his law degree. He worked as a clerk for Judge Carl Traub, and the Municipal Counselor’s office for the City of Oklahoma City. He worked for the firm of Felix, Bowman, Griffin and McIntyre, and partnered in Wheeler, Parsons and Hampton. He retired after 64 years as a trial lawyer.

He was a long time active member of Putnam City Christian Church, where he served as Elder for many years and was Chairman of the Board. He was President of OKC West Association for two terms, Chairman of the Board and Secretary of Stemen Laboratories. He played violin, loved music, was an avid reader and student of history. He was a loving husband, father and friend.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Maxine Traxler Hampton; daughters, Nancy Marie Drew, Kathryn Ann Wadley, (Tom) and Shannon Hampton-Bassett (Branden); grandchildren, Bryan Drew (Jennifer), Benjamin Drew (Shaunda), Matthew Drew (Ashling), Sarah Drew Backhus, (Travis), Jill Wadley-Smith (Kendall), and Richard Bassett; great-grandchildren, Ethan Drew, Wade, Jessikah, and Sihley Drew, Kendrick and Rianne Drew, Aubrey and Easton Backhus. Richard also loved Lynn Retz, Valeriya Cotten, and Dmitry Smirnov and treasured them as part of his family.

Services will be conducted by the Reverend Jim Gladney on Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 P.M. at Putnam City Christian Church, 4215 North Grove Avenue with interment at the Moore Cemetery in Moore, Oklahoma under the services of Mercer-Adams Funeral Home. Viewing will be Friday, 8am to 9pm at Mercer-Adams, Bethany.
