The son of John & Elizabeth (Kessler)Sterner, he married Lydia Shue December 16, 1852, and fathered William (b.11/07/53), Jeremiah (b. 05/30/55), Sarah (b. 08/29/56), George (b. 05/21/58),and Sevilla (b. 1860). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

Lydia died and he married Caroline Glatfelter in 1862, fathering Reuben (b. 12/27/63), John W. (b. 10/03/65), Henry S. (b.06/11/67), Malinda (b. 02/08/69), Franklin (b. 11/23/69 [sic]), Lucy Ann (b. 03/11/72 - married a Werner), Lydia (b. 04/29/74), Ella (b. 1876), and Leah (b. 1878).

Almost a Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York October 24, 1862,and mustered into federal service at York November 7 as a private with Co. B, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). However, within a few days he purchased the services of a substitute and mustered out.
