This stone should be considered a CENOTAPH. The body of this individual was interred in a burial ground on Meesenberg Hill, just outside the walls of Macao. In the 1830s the hill was excavated for use in land reclamation; it no longer exists. In the late 20th century, Lindsay and May Ride found this headstone, along with many others, stacked up in the New Protestant Cemetery. The stones were subsequently moved to the Old Protestant Cemetery and set in the wall dividing the upper and lower levels of the Cemetery.
