On August 6, 1878 in Grant City, Worth County, MO, Simeon B. Hathaway and Mary Frakes Hathaway adopted William Henry Allen. His last name was subsequently changed to Hathaway. It is believed that his biological parents were Rev. John Allen and Sarah Nellie Trimble (a sister of John Tremble, the husband of Ann Frakes who was a sister of Mary Frakes Hathaway) and he was probably born in Union Mills, Mohaska County, IA on Sept. 3, 1862. Sarah Nellie Trimble died of tuberculosis about four months after William was born. Very little else is known of his parents. The adoption records are in the Deed of Adoption book D, Page 114, Recorder’s office, Worth County Courthouse, Grant City, MO.
