MRS. JOHN Q. ROYCE DEAD
End Came After an Illness Lasting Several Years.

Mrs. Olive I. Royce, wife of John Q. Royce, secretary of the Aetna Building and Loan association, died Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock at her home, 616 Taylor street, after a prolonged illness of several years. Mrs. Royce’s illness began October 2, 1904, and has continued up to the time of her death with the exception of two years of good health during the six years. The immediate cause of her death was an abdominal abscess. Mrs. Royce has been confined to her room since March and has been very low for the past several weeks so her death has been expected for some time. All members of the family were present at her bed side when she died.

Mrs. Royce was 52 years old being born on May 4, 1858, in Jones county, Iowa. On May 4, 1887, she was married to John Q. Royce at Cawker City, Kan. Mrs. Royce was formerly married to Frank F. Crane of that city.

Mrs. Royce was associated with Mr. Royce in the newspaper business for over 20 years having edited a special page on both of Mr. Royce’s papers, the Smith center Bulletin and the Phillipsburg Dispatch. This work of Mrs. Royce caused her to be widely known over the state. For six years she was president of the Kansas Women’s Press association and during the time of Governor E. F. Stanley’s administration she was appointed on a committee composed of Mrs. Stanley and Mrs. Harbaugh, of Erie, Kansas, to visit all the charitable institutions in the state of Kansas. This work consumed one entire summer.

Mrs. Royce came to Topeka with her husband in May 1905. Mr. Royce was at that time appointed bank commissioner by governor Hoch which position he held for one term resigning the place to accept the position of secretary of the Aetna Building and Loan association, which he now holds. During the time Mrs. Royce has been in Topeka she has been very prominent as a club woman. She was a member of the Sorosis club and was associated with such women as Mrs. Margaret Hill McCarter, Mrs. A. A. Godard, Mrs. J. D. McFarland and other prominent club women.

The funeral of Mrs. Royce will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the residence. Besides her husband she leaves two sons, Talton F. Crane and La Rue Royce. Mrs. Royce’s brother, Judge J. B. Johnson, of Oklahoma City, and her sister, Mrs. Evelyn T. Blount, were here at the time of her death. Mr. Royce’s mother, Mrs. E. A. Royce, of Des Moines, Ia., is also here.
