William Pink Kennard

First born child of the family of eight of Simon Stockley Kennard and Mary Ann (nee Pink), William appears to have been named for his maternal grandfather who died young. He would have only been around the age of five years when the family immigrated to New Zealand, a very long way from his birthplace of Milstead in Kent, England. His youngest five siblings were all born in their new home of Southland. William married Rose King, a fellow English immigrant, in Sep 1892 at the Registry Office. The young couple moved to Winton then Spar Bush where William worked as a sawmiller for the New Zealand Pine Company. They kept coming back to Waianiwa, William was a Labourer and they lived in Philip and Sarah King's for a while before moving to Wright's Bush where he worked for Molloy's sawmill. Then back to Waianiwa in 1905 as a Labourer and they lived in Dudley Street before they bought their own place on Spar Bush Road. It was a small two roomed house to which they had a further two rooms added in 1910. After his wife's early death in 1911, William lived for another 26 years and spent some of that time living and working in the Taranaki area as a Labourer and Carpenter however had retired back to the south before his death in October 1937 so was able to be buried with Rose at Wallacetown.
Rose & William's family were Rose Amelia 1893-1976, Lilian Grace lived for just nine weeks in 1894, Thomas Philip 1896-1972, Frances Sarah King 1898-1984, Esther Emma Jane 1901-1954, Violet Evelyn (adopted) 1905-1985 and Louis Amos 1909-1967.
