Mary Virginia Whitlock Madsen
October 30, 1885 – April 25, 1949

Mrs. Virginia Whitlock Madsen, 63, Mt. Pleasant, prominent civic worker and active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Paul R. Summers, Salt Lake City, Monday after a lingering illness.

Mrs. Madsen was born Oct. 30, 1885 in Moroni, Sanpete county a daughter of Andrew Hyrum Jr., and Ann Maria Draper Whitlock. She spent her early life in Moroni, Mayfield, Sanpete county and Mt. Pleasant, where she attended schools. Later she resided in Provo and Salt Lake City and spent several years in McGill, Nev., and Ely, Nev. In 1911 Mrs. Madsen returned to Mt. Pleasant, where she reared two of her deceased sister's daughters. on Dec. 25, 1914, she was married to the daughters father, John K. Madsen, purebreed sheep industry pioneer. Mrs. Madsen spent much of her time working with her husband in the sheep business. He died in 1942. She also reared another deceased sister's son in 1917. She was active in LDS church work, serving on North Sanpete stake Relief Society board 10 years, president of Mt. Pleasant South ward Young Women's Mutual Improvement Assn., as counselor in the ward Relief Society and was a visiting Relief Society teacher. Until her illness four months ago, Mrs. Madsen was an ardent temple worker, and contributed much work toward the completion of Mt. Pleasant South L D S ward chapel. A member of Mt. Pleasant Out Night Out club, she also held membership in the Twentieth Century club there.

Mrs. Madsen is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William C. Olsen, Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Summers, Salt Lake City; a son, H. John Madsen, Salt Lake City; a brother Hyrum D. Whitlock, Preston, Nev., and two sisters, Mrs. E. A Madsen, Salt Lake City and Mrs. Ellen F. Luke, Provo.
