Edmund R. Blaske
---BATTLE CREEK -- Edmund R. Blaske, 70, of 84 Garrisvon Ave., Battle Creek, died Aug. 21 at Community Hospital where he had been a patient six weeks.
---Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Phillip Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Basso officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek. A Scriptural Service will be held at 7 o'clock this evening at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Service for equipment or Calhoun County Juvenile Court Fund, which was established by Judge Blaske. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
---Mr. Blaske was born in South Bend, Ind., Oct. 23, 1911, son of Frank L. and Pauline (Jaworski) Blaske. He lived on farms near Bronson and Barron Lake as a youth. He left high school early, having to go to work due to family financial problems. He then entered high school when he was nearly 20, completing school in three years, following graduating with attendance at the University of Michigan and its Law School where he graduated second in his law class in 1940.
---Mr. Blaske moved to Battle Creek in 1941 with his wife, the former W. Jayne Hill, and began the practice of law. He became Calhoun County Assistant Prosecutor and then Chief Assistant in 1943, and later served as a special Attorney General investigating Michigan prison conditions. Through his work, he developed an interest in the problems of children; an interest that led him to run for Probate Court Judge in 1948.
---He served as Calhoun County Probate Court Judge from 1948 to 1956. During his tenure in that office, he concentrated on efforts to find better care for mentally retarded children and called attention to the need for a new county juvenile detention home.
---He returned to private law practice following his term in the Probate Court. In 1970, he and his son E. Robert Blaske formed a general law practice.
---He was a member of the Calhoun County Bar Association, the Michigan Bar Association and belonged to the Athelstan Club in Battle Creek.
---Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Patricia Jayne) Macleod of Charlotte; sons, E. Robert of Bellevue and Thomas H. of Ann Arbor; one granddaughter; brothers, Harry J. of South Bend, Ind., and Anthony R. of Dowagiac; and a sister, Mrs. James N. (Marie) Bilbie of Ann Arbor.
