Flight Officer Vetter was the Navigator aboard
B-24J Liberator #44-41179 "Woody Wood
Pecker," serving with the 424th Bomb
Squadron, 307th Bomb Group, 13th Air Force
during World War II.

He was shot down by anti aircraft artillery
on mission over the Togian Islands, Dutch
East Indies (Indonesia).

Five crew members were Killed In Action
and five survived and were rescued and
returned to active service.

The four other airmen lost were:

2nd Lt. William P Barner, co-pilot
T/Sgt. Frank L Savino, radio operator
S/Sgt. Albert M Edwards, gunner
S/Sgt. Jack W Smalling, photographer
